The moon has long been a symbol of energy, with the power to pull ocean tides and cause transformation. In ancient lore, the moon was associated with the metal silver.

In legend, the moon could cause people to go crazy -- evidenced by the word lunatic, which has, as its root, the word, luna, which is Latin for moon -- and even change some men into wolves.

Murder, bird migration, fertility and agriculture are all said to be connected to or affected by the moon.

The moon is part of cultural myths around the world. In some myths the moon is associated with a goddess or considered female.
